the name

skaists is Latvian for beautiful. Karulis traces it to two roots — skaidrs, clear, and kaist, to glow — and the sense ran hot, then flushed, then bright, then beautiful. Its third dictionary sense is beautiful AND good: morally worth something, socially useful.
